Rosendo Luna

Rosendo Luna has been taking classes from Walt Bushey at what is now Artfit for sixteen years. He met Sensei Bushey when his Aikido school lost their lease and began practicing at Sensei Bushey’s facility. Shortly after, Rosendo began training in the Japanese weapons system with Sensei Bushey.

Through the years he has acquired much knowledge and skill in the Japanese weapons systems and has put that knowledge to use as an instructor. He is always available to help teach the classes at Artfit. He is specifically proud of his opportunities to study with Grandmaster Komi Sekiguchi and Grandmaster Nobuko Shimizu who visit Lubbock to share their knowledge of their respective systems on a regular basis.

Rosendo’s knowledge of weapons includes long sword, short sword, knife, walking stick, four-foot staff and seven-foot yari. He has recently added boxing and stick-fighting to his repertoire as well. Rosendo has toughly enjoyed his journey in martial arts, from student to instructor and hopes to continue learning and teaching.

Beatrice

I was not sure what I was expecting in those classes, but the classes turn out to be so rewarding in terms of developing strength, resilience, and confidence.

Beatrice

Every form of dances class is proven to be an amazing learning experience. What I acquire from pole and silk class is not only the techniques but also the idea that the body is capable of so many "impossibilities" that had once rooted in the mind as long as one trust oneself and give them a try.

Beatrice

The learning environment created by the Bushey’s is so precious! It is absolutely a judgement-free, criticism-free studio, where lots of encouragement and support are consistently given from both the instructors and the fellow students.

Beatrice
Beatrice is a joy to teach. She has an attention to detail and a natural grace that make her dance elegant yet strong. She always works hard which shows in the way she builds strength and accomplishes new moves. She is helpful and supportive of everyone around her. We asked her to tell us a little bit about her experience at ArtFit.

What brought you to these classes?

I came to Artfit for pole dance classes. I was not sure what I was expecting in those classes, but the classes turn out to be so rewarding in terms of developing strength, resilience, and confidence. Then I developed my passion for belly dance and aerial silks. Bellydance classes teach me to discover and trust in my beauty and a nice way to let it blossom. Aerial silk classes are similar to pole classes in my opinion, where a great deal of muscle strength and focus are crucial. I also really love that Olivia and Cheryl teach those classes from the perspective of modern dance, which I found so artistic and classy.

What benefits have you gained from taking these classes?

Every form of dances class is proven to be an amazing learning experience. What I acquire from pole and silk class is not only the techniques but also the idea that the body is capable of so many “impossibilities” that had once rooted in the mind as long as one trust oneself and give them a try. I never thought I could handstand for all my life until 1 year ago when I started pole, and now I can freely kick up to a handstand against the wall. I am looking forward to discovering more potentials within my body. The dance classes also provide me a healthy outlet where I can ferment those frustrations and upset into the determination of conquering the next move!

Please tell us about any positive experiences that you have had with ArtFit or anything else that you would like to share.

The learning environment created by the Bushey’s is so precious! It is absolutely a judgement-free, criticism-free studio, where lots of encouragement and support are consistently given from both the instructors and the fellow students. Cheryl is always there to physically and mentally support you and you just feel so safe to practice those scary pole move in the air when she is around. Above all, you can tell that the instructors are just good people. They care about you and make sure your time spent in the classes are worthwhile via their patient explanations and demos.

Carla

I came to ArtFit looking for belly dance classes and I ended up finding much more. Belly dance is a great exercise, mental and physical, but I eventually found myself driven to bigger challenges.

Carla

Pole and silks are very different from everything I have ever done in my life. Both require basic skills that I never had (cardio, strength, flexibility), all on top of spending a lot of time upside down, which scares me to this day... What I can say I have gained is confidence in my mind to remain focused and in my body to push further every time.

Carla

The number one positive thing for me is the quality instruction. Olivia and Cheryl are highly skilled in many dance forms and in teaching. The level of technical description and body awareness makes moves easy to comprehend, even if one's body is not quite ready to execute them

Carla
Carla has been attending classes at ArtFit for two and a half years. She came to us with previous bellydance experience. We are so glad that she decided to join us in bellydance and the other classes that we offer too. Carla has, recently, begun teaching Monday’s beginner bellydance class and has been a great addition to our studio.

What brought you to these classes?

I came to ArtFit looking for belly dance classes and I ended up finding much more. Belly dance is a great exercise, mental and physical, but I eventually found myself driven to bigger challenges. Starting pole dance and silks showed me that exercise does not have to be boring. In these classes I not only work towards physical fitness and artistic beauty, I overcome self-imposed fears.

What benefits have you gained from taking these classes?

I practiced several forms of dance before moving to Lubbock. I joined ArtFit after a 1-year hiatus from dance and I realized I should never have stopped. The belly dance instruction is excellent, in terms of technical details, choreography, improvisation and cultural aspects. I thought I knew quite a bit coming in, but Cheryl has huge knowledge breadth which, incorporated into belly dance, transforms her dance into a unique amazing style for this group. This makes ArtFit a true oasis in West Texas…

Pole and silks are very different from everything I have ever done in my life. Both require basic skills that I never had (cardio, strength, flexibility), all on top of spending a lot of time upside down, which scares me to this day… What I can say I have gained is confidence in my mind to remain focused and in my body to push further every time. These classes are hard, yet enjoyable. ArtFit students are very supportive and it seems that every time someone learns a new move, everyone wins! So, even on the tough days, you feel like it was worth watching someone else get there and you will too…

What do you hope to gain or achieve in the future through the classes that you take?

I need to continuously work on many things, from simply memorizing sequences and combinations to becoming more comfortable with doing things way up in the air… I need to keep working on flow, from one move to another, and also on strength and flexibility. I think everyone has specific moves they would like to conquer. For me, it is the pole air walk and the skin the cat plank…

Please tell us about any positive experiences that you have had with ArtFit or anything else that you would like to share.

The number one positive thing for me is the quality instruction. Olivia and Cheryl are highly skilled in many dance forms and in teaching. The level of technical description and body awareness makes moves easy to comprehend, even if one’s body is not quite ready to execute them… Students get used to being pushed beyond their comfort zone, but with the utmost care for safety. The atmosphere that they build is passed on to all students who are always cheering to see each other succeed. I think ArtFit is a unique place for adults to work out towards a personal achievement, and not only to get their daily reps of weight lifting.

Betty Arnold

The biggest benefit is being in shape and having a strong body. Also, gaining self-esteem and confidence. It takes a lot of practice and work to learn this dance, so it was a good feeling when I could actually do it.

Betty

I never knew you could have this much fun working so hard. If I am willing to try, Cheryl is always willing to help.

Betty
Betty Arnold has been a student at ArtFit for 12 years. Although bellydance has been her focus, she has also attended pole and silks classes. What Betty won’t tell you is that she is awesome at all of it. She answered a few questions for us about what brought her to ArtFit and what keeps her coming back.

What brought you to these classes?

I was helping a friend with his kids. They were taking karate classes & I watched Cheryl teach Belly Dance while I was waiting on them. I thought she was the most beautiful dancer I had ever seen & just knew I could never do that. My friend David Pattillo had a different view on that and told me to just take one class. If I didn’t like it I could stop. That was 12 yrs. ago! Can’t begin to tell you how happy I am that I tried it! So much fun, Cheryl is a great teacher. The costumes are absolutely beautiful!

What do you hope to gain or achieve in the future through the classes that you take?

I may be the oldest student Cheryl has so my hope for the future is that I continue to dance whatever age I am, because it keeps me moving and, yes, it keeps me feeling young!

Please tell us about any positive experiences that you have had with ArtFit or anything else that you would like to share.

Every time I go, it’s a positive experience. Some people are just natural teachers. That’s how I think of Cheryl and Walt because they can explain or demonstrate in a way that makes sense to me. Of course, Olivia is right there with them. If someone wants to be involved with professionals that are knowledgeable, more than competent, encouraging, and just all around great people then ArtFit is where you need to be!

Kent Baker

Sensei Walt Bushey is head instructor of the martial arts programs at ArtFit Lubbock where he offers an incredibly diverse and practical world of schooling. As a veteran of the US Air Force and an active Peace Officer of the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, Walt maintains a unique perspective as a martial artist by readily exercising ancient methods in pertinent, real-world situations.

Kent

This unique approach to martial arts combined with the unique perspective of Sensei Bushey provides what I believe to be the most complete and beneficial martial arts experience one could ask for.

Kent
Kent Baker is a Black belt under Walt Bushey and has been a long time student at ArtFit. He recently graduated high school and has moved to go to college. He has written his thoughts on his experiences in martial arts here at ArtFit and other martial arts and schools that he has explored.

What Makes ArtFit Different
Sensei Walt Bushey is head instructor of the martial arts programs at ArtFit Lubbock where he offers an incredibly diverse and practical world of schooling. As a veteran of the US Air Force and an active Peace Officer of the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, Walt maintains a unique perspective as a martial artist by readily exercising ancient methods in pertinent, real-world situations.

My name is Kent Baker and I have been a student of Walt’s for over 10 years, my focus almost exclusively in Shotokan Karate. However, my exposure to martial arts is not limited solely to Walt’s dojo. This past semester while I was away at college(Gig’ em, Aggies!), I explored and participated in several other martial arts programs, including competitive Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and a separate Shotokan dojo. During this time it became clear to me just how wide and varied the world of martial arts is. Each dojo I visited was specialized, centering on specific goals or purposes. For instance, the Shotokan class I participated in this past semester had a sparring system based on Olympic rules and regulations. Because of this, much of the material and many of the techniques taught in traditional Shotokan were overlooked because they served no purpose in a competitive environment. The class itself was focused more around professional-style competition and physical exercise. While this is in no way a bad thing, I believe it pales in comparison to the much more rounded education ArtFit offers because the purpose Sensei Bushey has for his students is not so specific.

While it is true that the ultimate goal of Karate classes at ArtFit is practical self-defense, this goal is not rigid, and the objective of each teaching changes depending on the student. For example, a certain technique taught to an 8 or 9-year old is most likely for the promotion of physical and mental growth. However, the same technique can be taught in an entirely different manner to a 20-year as a self-defense movement. The importance that can be drawn from any one technique or style is not limited. This same idea not only applies to the methods of Shotokan itself, but also to the class as a whole. This unique approach to martial arts combined with the unique perspective of Sensei Bushey provides what I believe to be the most complete and beneficial martial arts experience one could ask for.

Kathryn

ArtFit has become the place where I have "me time". It is the refuge I go to from the stresses of life, work, and school. I can work out my frustration on a heavy bag and I can work on my movement quality in dance classes.

Kathryn

...ArtFit has become my home away from home where I can challenge myself and continue to grow as a person in a safe, warm, and encouraging environment.

Kathryn
Kathryn is a vibrant person who is dedicated to attaining her own personal goals. She is always positive, helpful, and encouraging to the other students. We have enjoyed watching her progress over the last few years.  We asked her to share a few thing about her journey. She was so eloquent that we decide to print the whole question and answer session in her words.

ArtFit: What classes do you attend at ArtFit?

Kathryn: I have attended MMA/Kickboxing, Beginner Power Pole, Belly Dance Basics, Hip Hop, Silks and Flexibility class. Due to my schedule I am currently taking Beginner Power Pole and MMA/Kickboxing.

ArtFit: How long have you attended classes here?

Kathryn: Almost 2 years!

ArtFit: What brought you to these classes?

Kathryn: Before moving to Lubbock I had been involved with MMA/kickboxing for 2 years, 8+ years of weightlifting (on and off), and 18 months of Ballroom dancing. I have been seeking ways to challenge my body in strength, balance, and movement. I found ArtFit in a Google search for pole classes. When I saw that ArtFit offered a variety of dance classes and MMA/Kickboxing I knew I had to stop by and check it out. I was able to stop by and have a look around the gym. Cheryl was able to answer all of my questions and answer some I hadn’t thought to ask. The instructors were extremely welcoming and encouraging without pressuring me to move at a pace I wasn’t comfortable with. Curiosity led me to ArtFit but Cheryl, Liv and Walt were the reasons I stayed.

ArtFit: What benefits have you gained from taking these classes?

Kathryn: So many benefits!

Physical benefits: Increased endurance, increased strength, increased flexibility, increased body awareness, increased spatial awareness, increased balance, and weight loss.

Mental/Emotional benefits: I am more secure in my own body. I am comfortable looking in mirrors to watch my form. I am a lot more confident and self-assured. I always look forward to socializing with gym friends and instructors. I have also learned so much about what I can push myself to do. I am discovering my potential at ArtFit.

ArtFit: Please tell us about any positive experiences that you have had with ArtFit or anything else that you would like to share.

Tanner Hook

I have learned leadership skills, teaching skills, and how to fight.

Tanner Hook

...I hope to become a black belt and take my skills in the Marines.

Tanner Hook
Tanner Hook has been a karate student of Walt Bushey’s for 10 years. He came in as a shy young boy who had a tenaciousness that never quit. He never backed away from a match or an opponent. Tanner’s athleticism blossomed in martial arts. Over the years, he has become a great karate student who is on his way to being a great karate instructor.

Tanner came to us wanting to be able to defend himself. He says, “I just wanted to learn how to fight and how to defend myself.”  Through years of training Tanner believes that he attained those goals and more, “I have learned leadership skills, teaching skills, and how to fight.”  He has climbed the belt ranks, earning all the belts except for black, but is well on his way toward that goal.  He plans for martial arts to continue being a part of his life to black belt and beyond. He intends to eventually join the marines. He told us, “I hope to become a black belt and take my skills in the Marines.”

Tanner has become a confident young man who excels in all aspects of his life.  Tanner has grown into a strong leader that all his peers respect. His leadership skills made him an Assistant Senior Patrol leader and a member of The Order of the Arrow in Boy Scouts. He also excels in school, and is in the National Junior Honor Society.  He is learning to teach karate and assists Walt in the kid’s karate classes at ArtFit.

Tanner is a great illustration of a young man who sets a positive example for others. He is proactive in his community. Works hard and is disciplined.  He is a great role model for the younger children in his karate class and at school. We are proud that he is part of our ArtFit family.

Theresa Masey

The first benefit is that it got me off the couch, and the second benefit is I love to dance and Cheryl is very patient. It has help me lose weight and tone everything up.

Theresa Masey

…a great bunch of ladies who love to dance and build up each other. I love to perform, and Cheryl will show you the right way to do it.

Theresa Masey
Theresa Masey is our Spotlight Student this month. Her foray into bellydance began when she signed up at work for the Biggest Loser Challenge. She joined this challenge with her colleagues because she felt she needed to lose weight and get healthy.

Theresa didn’t feel like a gym was the right place for her, however, she had seen Cheryl and some of the students perform at an event and decided to call about classes. The next night was her first bellydance class. That was ten years ago, and she has been bellydancing ever since. Over the years she has become an integral part of the bellydance program at ArtFit.
We have watched Theresa transform her body and her confidence while becoming a beautiful dancer, but we asked her to tell us what benefits she feels that she has received through her bellydance journey. She told us, “The first benefit is that it got me off the couch, and the second benefit is I love to dance and Cheryl is very patient. It has help me lose weight and tone everything up.”

Theresa is a big part of our dance program. She performs regularly at ArtFit events, helps teach classes, and will step in and help out in just about any capacity. She has been known to help sew costumes, provide moral support for new dancers, and help with details at show time. Theresa has proven to be great role model and aspiration for women who have had the opportunity to dance with her.

As for future her future goals, Theresa hopes to continue her journey to lose weight, improve her dance, and self-confidence. Her experience at Artfit includes, “…a great bunch of ladies who love to dance and build up each other. I love to perform, and Cheryl will show you the right way to do it.”

Desi Valdez

"I have met so many people that are so amazing and I love listening to their stories about how they served for us or the things they have been through in the Dojo. I have learned a lot of different ways to protect myself and I have been able to show my sisters some of the simple defense moves. It is a great environment”

Desi Valdez

In DT I have learned many different ways to defend myself in many circumstance, and the best ways to be effective while doing the right thing. I have learned that not all altercations need to be dealt with violence and that there is many ways to successfully gain control of someone without hurting or injuring them.

Desi Valdez
Desi Valdez is a unique student at Artfit. She is a young female in the Defensive Tactics class which is usually filled with men. It has been awesome to have her in this class for the last 7 months. She has also been attending the MMA classes for the last three months.

Desi plans on going into the Law Enforcement field and was looking for classes that would prepare her for the job. She was looking for “basic defensive moves and different ways to approach situations.” She was also looking for knowledge of how to handle handguns, different ways to use them, and to defend herself. Desi tells us “In DT I have learned many different ways to defend myself in many circumstance, and the best ways to be effective while doing the right thing. I have learned that not all altercations need to be dealt with violence and that there is many ways to successfully gain control of someone without hurting or injuring them.” Desi looks forward to continued training. She would like to have better understanding on how to handle the guns that she will come across in the Law Enforcement field, and is continuing to practice so that the defensive moves become muscle memory. She says “so if I have to use them I can know what will be the best.”

We asked Desi to share her some of her experiences at Artfit. She said, “I have met so many people that are so amazing and I love listening to their stories about how they served for us or the things they have been through in the Dojo. I have learned a lot of different ways to protect myself and I have been able to show my sisters some of the simple defense moves. It is a great environment” She will be leaving Artfit at the end of the summer to attend college. We have enjoyed having her in class and wish her the best as she continues her education.
